Frequently Asked Questions

How can I contact you?
You can contact me via the 'Contact' page on this website. Alternatively, send an email to hello@caitlinmayphotography.com

How can I find out about your wedding or engagement photography?
Click the 'weddings' tab on this website or go to www.caitlinmayweddings.com

Are you qualified?
I have a degree in both Arts and Visual Arts (photo media) from Monash University. In the end, however, the only important thing is that you like my work! I have been photographing since I was fifteen and started my own business in 2010. This is my career, and my passion!

Deposit
I require a 20% deposit to secure your booking. This amount is not refundable in the event of cancellation although transferring your deposit to a different date is allowed. I often decline other bookings after securing your time and date, so please be mindful if you are considering cancelling or rescheduling your booking!

However, if the weather is torrential that day and it is simply not possible to go ahead– or you have been struck by an illness, allowances can be made, especially if the shoot is merely rebooked. I understand that things happen!

When do I pay?
I require a full payment before any images are sent to you. Paying on or before the day is preferred, but I also accept payment after the session’s completion.

What equipment do you own?
I own the following: Canon R5, Canon 5D Mark IV, Canon 85mm 1.2, Canon 50mm 1.4, Canon 35mm 1.4, Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro, Canon R 70-200mm 2.8, Speed lights, Mavic Pro 2 Drone, reflector, lighting equipment with soft boxes and other additional accessories.
I have a 27’’ Mac Studio, and an additional 27’’ screen and the newest Photoshop and Lightroom software.

How much extra for drone usage?
It's free! We just need to allow time for it. It is also weather and location dependant!

Where will the location be for our photo shoot?
I have knowledge of numerous beautiful locations throughout Victoria. These include woods, fields, parks, bushland, cityscapes and beaches. Let me know what you're imagining and we will make it happen! I'm also more than happy to follow your lead if you have a location in mind.

Do you travel?
I have a big travel bug and would love to travel for the shoot! If I am traveling long distances by car it is a small travel fee of $30 per hour of travel after half an hour each way from Kilsyth. If you're thinking somewhere even further (interstate, overseas) let me know and we will work something out!

On the Day

What do I wear?
This is ultimately something that is decided dependant on the vibe of the shoot.

For actor’s headshots, bring plain tops that aren’t going to draw attention away from your face. Also bring a couple changes of clothing to allow the audience to see you in different ‘looks’.

For families, wear clothing that looks nice together but isn't "matchy". Don't always wear the same colour, but the same colour spectrum looks nice (for example fall colours, cool colours, warm colours etc..)

For all other shoots, bring an assortment of clothing. If you’re struggling, or not 100% sure, ask me! Neutral (white, black, grey, beige) or vibrant colours (blue, red, purple, pink, green) often look the most captivating.

Avoid fluorescent colours, as it often reflects on the face. Avoid branded tops with large logos, or crazy prints that draw attention - unless it is a statement you want to make – it will detract from the image.

If you are not sure, again, ask me. I am always happy to give advice and help you plan your look/s.

Hair and Makeup
Similar to clothing, this can be discussed with me depending on the overall look of your session. If you want to have your hair and makeup done professionally, I can assist you in choosing an artist to help with the shoot – as I have many beautiful, talented individuals I regularly work with. But naturally, this will incur the makeup artist’s fee.

What do I bring?
If you want to bring props to your shoot, you are more than welcome to. Props like umbrellas on wet days, or flowers always look beautiful. Pets of any kind are always welcome!

It’s raining/hailing– what do we do?
As a rule, I have a policy that if you want to go ahead – I will too! But if it just won’t work, we can arrange a different date for the shoot. Provided that another date is booked, you will not lose your deposit. Keep in mind a little bit of drizzle with overcast skies can look lovely in a shoot!

What happens if you get sick?
Due to the climate we live in with COVID the last thing I would want to do is make anyone else sick. As soon as symptoms appear I would get tested. If they come back negative and I felt well enough to work, I would have a discussion with the client to determine if they are still happy for me to shoot (with a face-mask and sanitiser). If it is positive or I feel unable to work, I will contact the client and we will work to reschedule to a different date, or arrange a replacement (for events).

"I don't know how to pose!"
I have worked with countless beginners so understand how to direct and pose you to show off your best features. It is something that will feels odd at first, but as the session continues, you will feel more and more comfortable.

What are edited/retouched images?
All of your images will be retouched, which involves colour toning, contrast, brightness, sharpening and other editing processes. I have been using Photoshop for longer than I have been a photographer, and I pride myself on creating a beautiful finished product.

If you request extensive editing such as replacing full backgrounds, removing large, complicated objects or anything that requires far more work than usual, an additional fee may be required.

Can I edit the images myself?
In short, no. The images represent me as a brand, and having anyone else edit them takes away from that. If you have any additional editing requirements let me know and I will help you out.

What format will I receive the photos in?
High-resolution jpegs (for printing) and medium-resolution jpegs (for online)

Can we get an album?
Absolutely! I work with a lovely album company who create beautiful results. Price list is available here.

What about printing?
When you receive your digital gallery there will be a 'shop' tab where you can order prints, canvases, frames etc.. friends and family can also order from there if you send them your link.

If I haven’t answered your questions, please let me know!
I look forward to working with you!
